Haines June 26th 28th

Image
The ferry ride was just as you would expect, a ferry ride. A few waterfalls but not the scenery we were expecting. Looking back to Skagway. A cruise ship following us out. A cruise ship in Haines port. Getting off the ship. Not a big deal. For some reason, Haines did not appeal to either one of us. Not sure why, maybe because it is spread out and you really couldn't walk to town from our campsite. The RV park was very nice, full hookups and more space than some. If you were from the cruise ship, it would be quite a climb to get to the upper part of town. We did explore the area but that only took a couple of hours. Looking back up the channel from the beach. We picked up a few groceries, there was no milk left in town, all three stores. Good thing Pat froze some, for her coffee and cereal.  With Haines done, next day we headed back to Canada. There was a long stretch of road that the river had flooded over. The crews were building it back up when we went through. Luckily it wasn...

Skagway

Image
One of the main attractions in Skagway is the White Pass Railway. As it goes almost the same route to and from Whitehorse as driving, we decided not to bother with the train.  We drove back up the hill to take a few pictures. In the photo below, you can see the rail line just above the guard rail on the right, it goes up the valley, and back out on the mountain side on the left. The highway stays on this side of the main valley. There was supposed to be a geocache at this waterfall. We didn't find it, or the three other ones we looked for in Skagway. Looking down the valley towards Skagway. On the Thursday before we got there, a rock slide came down and hit the gangways and a cruise ship. There wasn't much damage but they had to call in the inspectors before they could move the ship. It came down right where the ship to the left is sitting. On the way to Dyea, now a ghost town, returning to nature. Skagway is the perfect tourist town, beautiful scenery, with the town very close...

Skagway June 24th 26th

We made it, now down the ten mile hill to Skagway. Love that exhaust brake, didn't have to touch the brakes all the way down. The scenery from Carcross to Skagway is spectacular. The first part you follow along Tagish LK. the Bennett Lk. Then a Glacier scarred rocky area before you come to the hill. A few pictures on the way to Skagway. The boarder crossing went pretty smooth, we had taken everything that we thought of out of the frig. etc. But we forgot three cherry tomatoes and a repackaged bag of Polish sausage, They missed the steak and pork chop and hamburger. My guess is they wanted the sausage for lunch. First glimpse of Skagway. There were three of these ships in port, so the drive through town was harrowing. Trying not to run over stupid tourists. They like to stand in the middle of the street and take pictures. We finally made it out to the RV site, it was very nice, the campgrounds are run by the city. We drove up to a lookout above town for this shot. The patch of tre...

Whitehorse June 21st 23rd.

As you may recall, we got parked next to smokers in the RV park last year and cut our visit here short. We tried a different one this year, although tight, no smokers near us. It was quiet at night. A bit of restocking, not much as we are heading for Alaska and have to be careful of what we take across the boarder. I went to the Transportation museum  and Pat went for a pedicure. The museum was good and Pat said that the pedicure was a good one.  We drove up the Long Lk. just to the north of town, very nice spot. Then checked out the burbs west of town. There is a little view point overlooking the Yukon River. Next was Miles Canyon. There was a Quilt shop on the main drag, so Pat had to check it out. One of the best she has ever been in, thought I was going to get heat stroke sitting in the truck, waiting for her. lol. We are very happy we got to check out Whitehorse, a very nice town. Small city. It is very busy, lots of tourists. At least two or three 737's fly in ever...

Atlin June 18th 21st.

As far as we are concerned, Atlin is right at the top of our favorite places. From the scenery, the people and the town, for us, it had it all. Now, if you were in the main campground, not out on the spit as we were, you may have a different opinion. Although they were all jammed together, there was lots of room out front of the rigs and the views are as spectacular as ours.  After we got set up and sat in the sun taking in the view, we decided to walk into town. It is a five to ten minute walk, just right. As it was my birthday, Pat decided that she would treat me to a dinner out. The restaurant didn't open till six, so we took in the sights around town. This dining experience was one of the highlights of our stay in Atlin. Because the restaurant opened at six, it filled up quite quickly. The staff was very friendly and made everyone feel at home. Orders were taken and as it is a smaller place, everyone knew what everybody had ordered. A good thing, the poor waitress and the compu...

Tesln Lk. June 14th 17th

There is a lot of road construction on this part of the highway.  I hit one rough section that sent everything a bit sideways. Tipped all the chairs over in the trailer. No other damage so all is good. Yes, there was a bump sign, all the ones before were fairly benign, not this one. I am paying closer attention to them now. At one point there were many miles of dusty gravel road, it was quite smooth though. They are chip sealing, way cheaper than asphalt but for roads that break up every spring, it is a better way to go. Before we got here, there was a lot of rain and Teslin lake is over flowing. As we came through town, we saw many people filling sand bags. Just on the edge of town there are around seven houses that we could see that had huge sand bags around them trying to keep the water out. I did not want to take any pictures of the houses but here is one at the rest stop. A closer shot of that mountain. There is a view point as you come into Teslin from the west. The weather h...
