Home July 27th

It's a wrap, we finally made it home. We left the field in Cloverdale at 7:45am, got to the terminal at 9:00am. We were told not to expect to get a boat till the 4:45. Not much we could do about it but wait and hope for a earlier one. At least the mountain shades the parking lot till well after noon. So the 9:50 came and went, then the 12:10, yay, we made the 2:25. We were home and parked by 5:00 a long day of waiting.  Numbers for our trip. Mileage 12542.7km Fuel $6043.83 Camping $2228.79 Animals spotted Bison 84 plus Moose 8 Deer 8 Bear 23 + 2 Grizzlies Sheep 4 Coyote 1 Fox 2 Porcupine 2 Most of these animals, we saw in B.C. on the beginning of our trip. Most of the Bison were in the NWT The last moose we saw was on the Coq. just this side of Lac Le Jeune. This makes us shake our heads. There are road info signs that say, call 511 for Hwy conditions. Most of these are at least 100km both directions from any cell service. Good placement guys. Our new favorite places are Atli...

On our way home July 22nd 26th

For a Provincial Park, 10 Mile Lake is interesting. It has 23 pull throughs. Here's a picture. There are three or four in a row, then a bunch of bush. We chose this site because we had bush on one side. After a bit, Jack comes out of the bush with a mouse hanging out of his mouth. I was in getting supper and closed the door so he couldn't get in, then when he dropped it Pat grabbed Jack and put him in the trailer. The mouse ran away. So, after supper we are in the trailer and Jack is locked in. The mouse comes back to taunt him, running around the picnic table. All he can do is watch from the door, I guess the mouse got the last laugh. We left there and headed down 97 and turned left onto Hwy 24, it takes you across to Hwy 5. Nice drive, we checked out Bridge Lake PP. This one is very old, the spaces are small, as is the maneuvering room. There was only one or two site we would fit in and you would have to be lucky to find one empty. I think we will cross that one off our list...

Fraser Lk. July 21st.

Smithers is one of our favorite towns, great mountain views, nicely laid out, clean and a great municipal RV park. with full hookups. We stayed for two nights, got caught up on laundry, shopping (food) and reading our books.  Next stop was Fraser Lk. another municipal campground, this one by donation, which we did. It is on White Swan Lk., no services, but nice location. I think there was maybe 10 campsites, about half were used by evening. A few bike tent campers were staying on the grass by the lake. One couple were planning on carrying on to Argentina, good luck. These sites were pull throughs, no privacy, but for one night no big deal. There was lots of grass between the sites. We are now at Ten Mile Lake PP. just north of Quesnel, another nice PP. Being the weekend, a few locals ready to party, but they were all quite by 11:00 pm, we got a good nights sleep. The cell service here is very iffy, so no pictures. I may try to put some in later, would mostly be of the campsit...

No Cell service July 14th 19th.

The drive trough Hwy 37  is spectacular, not much for wildlife this year but still awesome. Our first stop was Boya Lk.PP, found a nice site and set up. Later we took a walk down to the lake, they rent kyaks and canoes. They supply life jackets, a good thing. Three young guys took the canoe for a ride and about 300m out, they flipped it over. They were laughing about it at first, then the cold water hit home. Rather than just coming to shore and getting someone with a boat to get the canoe, they decided to swim to shore with it, could have been a big mistake. By the time they got to shore, they were pretty much done. One guy was in a lot of distress, tired and cold. I am sure there was no alcohol involved, lol, we were glad to see a positive outcome. This welcomed us to Boya. The mosquitoes were bad, so we used the thermocells to keep them at bay. That works in the evening but I don't use them when hooking up. By the time they are effective, around 20 minutes, I would be done...

Whitehorse to Watson Lake July 11th 13th

Image
Before we left Pine Lk. we met a fellow that had just towed his trailer to the campsite on three wheels. He had just came in off the rough road, some how he had lost a wheel bearing and attempted to tow his trailer with a wheel missing. Bad idea, he absolutely destroyed his spindle, he took the axle out at the campsite. Next day he was taking it to Whitehorse to see if he c, ready to could find a new one. We wished him luck, hopefully he found one. To top it off he was with a group that carried on to Haines, then to Skagway, then the White Pass train trip. Unfortunately he was going to miss it all. He also told us of a guy that broke a spring shackle, they tied it up to the frame and he hoped to get it welded in Haines. Another guy lots his towed, it received some damage. We also saw a small trailer that had ratchet straps over it holding it to the frame. So our broken plate and a few bounces, we got lucky, or I slowed down enough not to break anything. At Whitehorse we restocked ...

Glennallen July 7th 10th

Image
Our plan was to go back to Glennallen then head down to the Kenai Peninsula and visit Seward, Whitter and maybe Homer. As the weather had changed here in Valdez, we checked it for the Kenai. Rain and low clouds for at least a week, can't see much in the rain, so we decided to head for Dawson City instead. We kept going from Glennallen to Tok and checked the road reports. Road closed, forest fires in the area, the smoke so thick they had to use a pilot car to get you through. The only option was to head back the way we came. Back over that really rough road. Not too bad going back when I took my time and slowed to a crawl over the bad parts. Everything in the trailer was mostly in one piece when we got to the campsite. This time in Tok we stayed at Alaska Stove Campsite. There was one of these in every site and a lot of old stoves around the campground. We got to the border and we waited for an hour and a half to get through. Not that many cars in front but there was a problem of so...

Valdez July 5th 7th

Image
The scenery on the second half of the way to Valdez is spectacular. The highway is one of the better ones so far. When we got here the first RV Park we went to was full, we found a spot in Valdez RV Park. Gravel parking lot but full services and good cell service. As I was unhooking the trailer a C17 Globemaster did a mock landing at the airport. The airport is up the valley. The views from our the campsite and from down town. It is less that a half a block walk to town. I took these yesterday and again this morning, weather is changing. It burnt off in the afternoon, so we drove back up the hill for these shots. Horsetail Falls and Bridalveil Falls. This is Keystone canyon and it was very cool. It was time for a late lunch when we got back, ended up in the Fat Mermaid. Pat had Chicken Taco's and I had the shrimp ones, they were good. I did ask about the King Crab legs, $109.00 for around a pound leg. I said no thanks, I will wait till Costco has them again. Drove up to Valdez Gla...
